August 26, 2009
South Africa's largest employer reported this week that about 14,500 of its employees in southern Africa, 18 percent of its workforce in the region, are HIV-positive. Anglo American said about 7,400 people, or 51 percent of those needing treatment, are in "disease management programs." The London-based company acknowledged this is "well below the target of 75 percent for 2008." Anglo American is the world's chief producer of platinum and owns a stake in the largest diamond producer, De Beers.
