U.S. News Illinois: Teacher Ousted Over AIDS Video Gets His Job BackAugust 25, 2009 Four months after he was fired for showing an AIDS prevention video to his eighth-grade science class, teacher Patrick Szady has been rehired at St. Francis de Sales Parish's Catholic elementary school in Lake Zurich. Numerous parents and former students had taken up Szady's cause; some even wrote to Cardinal Francis George on his behalf. Szady said he had shown the video -- "Time Out: The Truth About HIV, AIDS and You" -- to classes in several previous years and was shocked when he was fired for showing it this past April. Sister Mary Paul McCaughey, superintendent of schools for the Archdiocese of Chicago, said Szady has agreed not to show the video again and to follow Catholic school teachings going forward. McCaughey said the video's content is not at issue; rather, "Educationally, it's too long and it's dated." The video features former NBA great Earvin "Magic" Johnson and entertainer Arsenio Hall.
