International News South Africa Minister Says World Cup May Increase HIV/AIDSAugust 4, 2009 As South Africa prepares to host the next World Cup -- June 11-July 11, 2010 -- the nation's health minister has warned that the huge event could further the spread of HIV/AIDS. Speaking before the national AIDS council, Aaron Motsoaledi said, "2010 is going to come with good things but it may also come with dangerous things. Are we going to find the rate of [HIV] infection accelerating because of 2010?" Held every four years, the World Cup soccer championship is the globe's most popular sporting event and is expected to bring a flood of tourists to South Africa. The nation is home to the world's largest HIV/AIDS epidemic, with some 5.7 million people infected.
