Help Get Health Care Reform Back on Track

Don't Let Health Care Reform Derail! Call the Senate

July 21, 2009

There has been a lot of action on health care reform this week.

On Tuesday of last week, the House of Representatives released its reform legislation, which has many provisions that will benefit low-income people living with HIV/AIDS and other chronic conditions. Details will be provided in upcoming Alerts and updates.

On the next day, the Senate Health Education Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee passed its version of health care reform, which also has many good provisions for people with HIV.

However, there are signs that health care reform legislation could be in danger of being stalled or delayed-especially in the Senate.

The Senate Finance Committee has yet to introduce its bill, which will be merged with the Senate HELP version to become the final Senate bill. Some key members of the committee have publicly called for slowing the timeline. This keeps us further from the goal of securing meaningful health care reform this year.

President Obama has called for the House and Senate to pass their versions by the end of July so a final bill can be negotiated by October. For this to happen, Congress needs to hear from you that this is a top priority. Please take a few minutes to urge your Members of Congress to act quickly to pass legislation that helps people with HIV and others who need expanded access to care and treatment.

How you can help:

Call your U.S. House Representative and two U.S. Senators. Ask to speak to the staff person who handles health care issues. You may speak to this person live or you may get their voicemail. Either way, tell them:

"My name is __________ and I'm calling from (city/state). Health care reform is a top priority issue for people living with HIV/AIDS and we need meaningful legislation passed and signed this year. I urge Representative/Senator _______________ to do everything in his/her power to ensure that Congress passes comprehensive health care reform legislation without delay."

You can reach your Representative and Senators by call the Capitol Switchboard at 1-202-224-3121. If you don't know who represents you in Congress, go to and enter your zip code in the upper right corner.

Phone calls are particularly effective right now because Congress is moving quickly. However, if you prefer to send an email, go to your Representative and Senators' websites (linked from and

You will find instructions on sending emails to that office. Cut and paste the phone message, make sure your name and the Representative/Senator's name is included, and add a short personal note explaining why this issue is important to you.

If you need help figuring out who your Senators are or how to call/email them, write to and someone will help!
