Ohio: Case Western Reserve University Dental School Receives $9.5 Million Federal Grant

June 16, 2009

The National Institutes of Health's National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research has awarded a five-year, $9.5 million grant to the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine. According to a statement from the school, the 22-member research team will use the grant to "unravel changes in the human body's innate immune system in HIV-infected people on antiretroviral therapies" and to learn why HIV-positive persons receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy have increased incidence of oral complications, "such as a quadrupled rate of contracting human papillomavirus." Professor Aaron Weinberg, chair of the Department of Biological Sciences at the dental school, will lead the research.
