AIDS & Other Terminal Illness

Fall 1996

Dear Friend;

Because of you, I saw the moon last night! It was so nice to see it, so gray and full. It was just like you promised, and that's not all. The sky was full of stars. So naturally, I said a wish for us. I only wish for us to be together always. That even when I am gone, I will always hold your hand, especially when you are sad. I will be the one person to make you happy. And you know how happy we were as kids!

At first when I knew that it was time, my fear took over. I didn't want to go. I wasn't ready to let you go. But, you told me it's okay now and when you held my hand, my fear went away. And dear friend, do you remember working in the yard, playing at school, all those hours at night, sitting on the grass, looking at the stars? How we wished, with all our hearts, upon that very sky, knowing we would always be together. And you know we are. For you are my eyes, ears and even my mouth. Even though I couldn't speak, I knew you heard me when I said that I loved you.

This morning as the sun warmed my face, I could smell the rain and dear friend, I knew that the time had come for me to go. As you hold my hand, with the moon upon my face, our tears of good-bye, fill the sky with the rain. So my friend, let me say I love you and thank you for all you have done -for being there for me, for helping me to realize that I am ready to go.
