Press Release

Give Our Youth the Facts!

Tell Your Senator to Co Sponsor the REAL Act

March 19, 2009

Dear Friends,

Our congressional allies Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Representative Barbara Lee (D-CA) have reintroduced the REAL Act, Responsible Education About Life Act, S. 611 H.R. 1551 to fund programs that provide medically accurate, age-appropriate comprehensive sex education.

This is morally right, politically smart and policy wise. Most importantly, it will provide children and teens with the information they need to make responsible and informed decisions about their health and their futures. Studies have shown that comprehensive programs that teach about both abstinence and contraception help youth to withstand the pressure to have sex too soon and sexually active youth to use protection.

It's hard to believe that this is controversial. But it is. For over 10 years, the federal government has promoted abstinence-only programs which have been shown to be ineffective and dangerous for failing to teach young people how to protect themselves from disease. Congress remains resistant to eliminating these programs.

Urge your Members of Congress to support the REAL Act to give our young people the opportunity to act responsibly and protect their health and futures.

Peace and blessings,
Reverend Carlton W. Veazey
