U.S. News Syphilis Cases on Rise in MinnesotaMarch 6, 2009 Preliminary data from the Minnesota Department of Health show that reports of early syphilis cases jumped from 114 in 2007 to 159 in 2008, an increase of 39 percent. Of the cases logged in 2008: 97 percent were male; 73 percent were white; 16 percent were African-American; and 5 percent were Latino. Among 15- to 24-year-olds, syphilis reports rose from 17 in 2007 to 37 in 2008, an increase of 117 percent. New infections continued to be centered in the Twin Cities metro area.
