Brazilian Priest Suspended for Support of Condoms

February 27, 2009

Citing his public position "in favor of the use of condoms, his support of gay marriage, and his opposition to priestly celibacy," the Catholic Church has suspended the Rev. Luiz Couto from his priestly duties. Couto, who is also a member of Congress (Workers' Party), serves as a priest in the northeastern state of Paraiba. His spokesperson said Couto is not an advocate of gay marriage but opposes discrimination "including discrimination against homosexuals."
