International News AIDS Fund Head Fears Impact of Economic CrisisFebruary 13, 2009 Wednesday in Oaugadougou, Burkina Faso, the executive director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria said he is "very concerned" about the impact the global economic crisis will have on efforts to curb diseases targeted by the fund. The Global Fund is already facing a $5 million shortfall for its 2008-2010 programs, said Michel Kazatchkine. "I'm afraid of the impact the financial crisis will have, first of all on the rich countries which will find it difficult to provide resources but also the impact on poor countries as the crisis will touch them too," he said. Kazatchkine is accompanying French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, who is making her first trip as goodwill ambassador for the fund.
