As President Obama begins work on his Fiscal Year 2010 budget, your voice is urgently needed to ask him to spend No More Money on abstinence-only-until marriage programs. Tell President Obama that his first budget is an opportunity to take an important step toward ending these harmful and ineffective programs.
The federal government has allocated more than $1.3 billion for abstinence-only-until-marriage programs. Yet research shows that teaching comprehensive, age appropriate sexuality education does not increase rates of sexual activity. Youth who receive a solely abstinence-based curriculum are less likely to protect themselves from HIV and other sexually transmitted infections than students who receive a comprehensive curriculum. But each year $176 million are wasted on these ineffective and dangerous programs.
In order to make responsible, healthy decisions, young people need medically accurate, age-appropriate information about sex and sexuality. President Obama supports medically accurate, age-appropriate sex education. Now is the time for him to put that commitment into action.
There are currently three separate federal funding streams for abstinence-only-until-marriage programs, and no dedicated federal funding stream for comprehensive sex education.
In the next few weeks, the President will submit his first budget to Congress, and it must eliminate funding for abstinence-only-until-marriage programs. In addition, we are asking that President Obama create policy based on science, and include at least $50 million in his budget directed to fund comprehensive sex education.
Tell President Obama: No More Money for Abstinence-Only-Until-Marriage Programs; Fund Comprehensive Sex Education
