AIDS Cases on Rise Among Hispanics in New Mexico

In a statement Tuesday, the state Health Department said New Mexico has seen a steady increase in new HIV/AIDS cases among Hispanics since 2003. Through the end of last year, the department had registered 1,322 people with HIV and 2,155 people with AIDS. Hispanics were 45 percent of the state's cases in 2007, while Caucasians accounted for 33 percent, and African Americans for 5 percent. New Mexico's combined state and federal HIV prevention budget is about $3 million annually.
