The AIDS Clinical Trials Unit at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals in Cleveland and the University of Pittsburgh are recruiting women for a study that will test two approaches to HIV prevention. Both methods use the HIV drug tenofovir (Viread). Participants in one study arm will take the medication orally, while those in the other study arm will receive it vaginally. The study began this month and should be completed in 2009. The length of the clinical trial is approximately 21 weeks. Funded by the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the trial is also taking place in Uganda and South Africa. Cleveland-area women interested in enrolling in the study should visit www.clevelandactu.org, or telephone 216-844-2437.
