Number of Inmates Infected With HIV Declines

According to a recent report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the number of HIV-positive inmates in state and federal prisons fell slightly in 2006, the third consecutive such decrease. Among the report's highlights:

  • Between 2005 and 2006, the number of HIV-positive inmates fell by about 3 percent -- from 22,676 to 21,980.
  • Through the end of 2006, 5,977 inmates had been diagnosed with AIDS, an increase from 5,620 in 2005.
  • Confirmed AIDS cases represented about one-quarter of the inmates known to be HIV-infected.
  • Twelve federal inmates died of AIDS-related causes in 2006, a decrease of more than 50 percent from 2005.
