Duane Reade and Gay Men's Health Crisis Partner to Provide New Yorkers with Free HIV Testing
June 9, 2008
New York, N.Y. -- Duane Reade Holdings, Inc. and Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC) today announced that they have partnered to launch a new HIV testing initiative. GMHC's mobile testing unit and its outreach counselors will be stationed outside of select Duane Reade stores where they will offer free, confidential, on-the-spot HIV testing and counseling to the community. Appointments are not necessary and all are welcome.
"As New York's leading drug store, we strive to provide affordable and convenient services that aid in improving the health and overall wellbeing of New Yorkers," said John Lederer, Chairman and CEO of Duane Reade. "We are excited about this partnership with GMHC and we look forward to increasing awareness and offering opportunities for HIV testing in communities throughout New York City."
"We know that fear and the stigma of HIV and AIDS continues to keep people from getting tested and accessing care," said Dr. Marjorie J. Hill, CEO of Gay Men's Health Crisis. "Having a trusted family friend like Duane Reade as a partner helps us to break through the barriers associated with HIV testing. With their support, we will continue to find the one in four HIV-positive New Yorkers who are unaware of their HIV status, and provide them with the information and care they need."
The most recent statistics compiled by the New York Department of Health and Mental Hygiene show that in 2006 there were 98,861 persons living with HIV/AIDS in New York City. Of those individuals 61,589 were living with AIDS.1
Participating Duane Reade stores include the following locations: 58 E. Fordham Road in the Bronx; 247 Herkimer Street and 2141 Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn; and 180 Seventh Avenue, 2108 Third Avenue, and 598 Broadway in Manhattan.
