International News Vietnam Detects Nearly 10,000 HIV Carriers in 2007January 24, 2008 Today, the Vietnam Administration of HIV/AIDS Control said 9,978 new HIV cases were recorded last year, raising the cumulative number of HIV/AIDS cases in the country to 128,367. Of these, 25,219 have been diagnosed with AIDS, of whom 14,042 have died. Vietnam aims to reduce the HIV infection rate among its population of 86 million to below 0.3 percent by 2010 and keep it unchanged after 2020. The country has recently seen intensified production of AIDS drugs in order to provide patients improved access to more low-cost medicines, VAHAC said.
