New York: Lawmaker Drafts Bill to Study Syringe Use

December 4, 2007

Assembly member Andrew Raia is drafting a bill that would ask "the [state] department of health to study all aspects of single-use, nonreusable syringes and make a recommendation about where they can be used," the East Northport Republican said. Raia is taking the action in response to the case of Dr. Harvey Finkelstein, a Dix Hills anesthesiologist who reused injection syringes to extract medication from multidose vials, thereby contaminating them and transmitting at least one case of hepatitis C infection. However, department spokesperson Claudia Hutton said there are instances where the reuse of syringes may be appropriate, and the department is more interested in seeing the elimination of multidose vials.
