Caribbean Broadcasters, Global Media AIDS Initiative to Expand HIV/AIDS-Related Broadcasting in Haiti

November 15, 2007

Media Partnership for HIV/AIDS-Related Programming in Haiti, Caribbean Broadcast Media Partnership on HIV/AIDS, Global Media AIDS Initiative: The new collaboration will make HIV/AIDS-related programming and resources available in Haitian Creole to radio and television audiences in Haiti starting Dec. 1. Through the initiative, GMAI will provide technical and financial support to translate and distribute programming content produced through CBMP's LIVE UP initiative, an HIV/AIDS public information campaign focused on the Caribbean. The content will include television and radio public service advertisements, as well as long-form programming, such as episodes of "LIVE UP: The Show." CBMP, based in Barbados, receives strategic and technical guidance and production support from the Kaiser Family Foundation. The Ford Foundation and the Elton John AIDS Foundation provide additional financial support to underwrite production of campaign materials and informational resources. According to UNAIDS, adult HIV prevalence in Haiti is estimated to be 3.8%, and about 190,000 people live with HIV/AIDS in the country. Haiti had about 16,000 AIDS-related deaths in 2005 (Kaiser Family Foundation release, 11/14).
