13 Percent of Vietnamese Prostitutes Under 18: Report

October 30, 2007

Surveys show that 13 percent of prostitutes in Vietnam are under 18, while 42.4 percent are ages 18-25, Deputy Minister of Health Trinh Quan Huan recently told an AIDS prevention meeting. Through the end of August, Vietnam had registered more than 128,367 HIV patients, including 25,219 with AIDS, of whom 14,042 had died. Toward the goal of cutting HIV prevalence to below 0.3 percent by 2010, Vietnam is urging youth to avoid prostitution and drug use and follow the "ABC" (Abstinence, Be faithful, use Condoms) prevention model.
