Florida: AIDS Bells at Home

October 12, 2007

A set of bells dedicated to those lost to AIDS was installed Sunday in the new chapel at King of Peace Metropolitan Community Church in St. Petersburg. The 26 bells -- one for each year in which the disease has caused deaths, beginning in 1981 -- had previously been a mobile memorial. "They are representing thousands and thousands of people who are dying of AIDS every day," said the Rev. Lorraine Brock. "Whether they're in Africa or Asia or the United States doesn't matter. This is just a reminder that it has not stopped." Organizers plan to add one bell each year until there are no more deaths caused by HIV/AIDS.
