Greetings From the New
Women Alive Treatment Advocate

Fall/Winter 1997

My name is Marilyn Howell. I am the newest addition to the Women Alive Team. My position here is "Treatment Advocate". What I do here, is provide treatment information to women and men who call on our Hotline (1.800.554.4876) or business phone (213.965.1564) with questions. I also help women who come into our drop-in center, one-on-one.

I receive all kinds of questions from people. I really enjoy it. Sometimes I know the answer and then there are times I need to do some research. Your questions keep me on my toes!

At the Clinic

Three days a week I work off site. Mondays and Tuesdays I am at LAUSC 5p21, doing Treatment Advocacy with the patients at the clinic. On Wednesdays, I'am at the Charles Drew Oasis Clinic, providing Treatment Advocacy with the patients there. I like being at the sites, because I have direct contact with the people.

At Women Alive we call the women who come here "Members", we don't do long intakes and ask all about your past sexual behaviors. We don't call women "clients" because you are our equals. Most of us here, at Women Alive are living with the virus. But when I'm referring to a clinic, I use the word "patients".

Most of the time, Doctors are very busy and therefor explain things relatively quickly. Then when the Doctor walks away you are left wondering what did she/he say? How do I take this medication? I forgot to ask this question. Well, that's why I am there, in the clinic. You can come and talk to me before you leave. This way your questions don't go unanswered and we can talk about any concerns you may have about adherence and side effects of medications, viral loads, T-cells, etc.

So, if you feel uncomfortable about asking a question of the doctor or if you didn't understand the information, I can spend more time explaining the information to you. I can provide you with reading materials. I will even ask the doctor your question for you, if that's what you need and want. I love my work so please, use me up!

Women's Chat

I am so excited! Why? Because we have started a new "chat/support group" exclusively for women.

That's right Girlfriend, just for Women. Yes, it took an organization like Women Alive to pull it together. Every Second and Fourth Thursday of the month from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm. And for those of you who cannot attend the group during the week, we'll we set aside The First Saturday of each month for you all. Please call ahead if you wish to attend the Saturday Group.

We cover an array of topics from AZT to vaginal yeast infections. We talk about whatever else comes up. We certainly would love to have you join us at our group. We support every woman who is either living with this disease or affected by it in some other capacity.

Oops! I had forgotten to tell you the location. Well where else but,

    Women Alive
    1566 South Burnside Avenue
    Mid-City Los Angeles.

Getting There

If you need child care or transportation, please allow us a three to four day advance notice so that we can insure you those services.
