California: New Manager for Under One Roof

Mark Burn has become general manager of Under One Roof, the Castro Street retail store that returns its proceeds to HIV/AIDS service organizations throughout the Bay Area. Since opening in 1990, Under One Roof has distributed $3.8 million and currently donates to 29 organizations. It also hosts annual fundraisers such as Sparkle SF, the November Champagne and sparkling wine tasting/auction.

Burns, who took the position on Aug. 21, said with government cuts in HIV/AIDS funding, the store is needed more than ever. "As the face of AIDS changes, the base becomes broader in terms of need," he said.

Burns has a range of corporate, retail and nonprofit experience. He was diagnosed with AIDS in 1997 and has lived in the Castro for 10 years.

Under One Roof sells items ranging from home decor to children's toys. It has seven full- and part-time staff members and 90 volunteers. Burns said the shop receives donated items but the majority of its stock is purchased through contributions from the groups it works with.
