Mark S. King

Mark S. King has been an active AIDS activist, writer and community organization leader since the early 1980s in Los Angeles. Diagnosed in 1985, Mark has held positions with the Los Angeles Shanti Foundation, AID Atlanta, and AIDS Survival Project. He has been an outspoken advocate for prevention education and for issues important to those living with HIV.

Mark has appeared as a spokesperson on ABC News, 48 Hours, CNN News and in The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. His award-winning writing has appeared in Newsweek, The Advocate and The Washington Blade, among others. In 2008, Mark was featured in the award-winning documentary Meth as a crystal methamphetamine addict in recovery.

Mark has been honored for his writing numerous times, most recently winning the 2008 National Lesbian and Gay Journalism Association award for best opinion piece of the year, for his essay "When We Were Heroes," about the early days of the AIDS epidemic.
