AIDS Rate in Kenya Drops Due to Increased ARV Use

August 14, 2007

Today, the state-run National AIDS Control Council said the increased rollout of antiretrovirals (ARVs) helped drop Kenya's AIDS prevalence rate to 5.1 percent last year from 5.9 percent in 2005. In 2006, 57,000 deaths were averted thanks to the growing use of ARVs, NACC said. The council also reported a decline in new HIV infections from 60,000 in 2005 to 55,000 last year, but it expressed concern that most new infections were occurring among young people. NACC statistics show at least 1.3 million Kenyans are living with HIV/AIDS, 65 percent of whom are women ages 19-45.
