International News Palestinian in Libyan AIDS Case Gets Bulgarian CitizenshipJune 19, 2007 The Palestinian doctor who was convicted, along with five Bulgarian nurses, of deliberately infecting hospitalized Libyan children with HIV has been granted Bulgarian citizenship. Dr. Ashraf Juma Hajuj has been a Bulgarian citizen "since last week," Bulgarian Foreign Minister Ivaylo Kalfin said on Tuesday. The six are under sentence of death for the infections; all have maintained their innocence in the case, which has now lasted eight years. The citizenship switch is seen as way to speed the extradition of Hajuj along with the five nurses in the event the case is settled in their favor. Libya's supreme court is set to begin a final review of the case on Wednesday. Agence France Presse 6.19.2007 This article was provided by U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
