International News Ukraine: Elton John Rocks for Charity in KievJune 18, 2007 On Saturday, Elton John gave a concert on Kiev's Independence Square to draw attention to the HIV/AIDS problem in Ukraine. "I am here to support you all against AIDS," John told the audience of 200,000, including President Viktor Yushchenko, former leader Leonid Kuchma, and Russian envoy Viktor Chernomyrdin. Volunteers handed out condoms and leaflets before the concert, which was broadcast live on Ukrainian television. John's AIDS Foundation has funded 23 HIV/AIDS-related projects in Ukraine over the past six years with more than $2.6 million. The concert also honored Kuchma's daughter, Olena Franchuk, and her husband Viktor Pinchuk, who pledged a $2.5-million grant to the foundation.
