International News Desmond Tutu Launches AIDS Hospice CampaignMay 17, 2007 In San Diego on Tuesday, South African Archbishop and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Desmond Tutu kicked off a drive to raise money to provide hospice care for AIDS patients in sub-Saharan Africa. "In my own country, South Africa, we have been burying 600 people a day, something like two jumbo jets crashing," Tutu said in Balboa Park. He urged the audience to "put the face of someone you know, someone you love, on those statistics." Administrators of the Diana Legacy Fund -- named for the late Diana, Princess of Wales, who was known for her devotion to AIDS causes -- hope to raise $10 million in the next five years for AIDS patients in the sub-Saharan region. The launch coincided with Tutu's visit to the San Diego office of VITAS Innovative Hospice Care, the largest US provider of hospice services.
