Black Expo Heads to South Africa, a Focus Will Be on HIV/AIDS Assistance

May 17, 2007

Delegates from the Indiana Black Expo, a roundtable of civil leaders from the African-American community, leave Thursday for South Africa. Their 11-day trip will focus on building outreach and awareness of HIV/AIDS, said Joyce Rogers, Expo's president and CEO, who will travel with state Rep. Vernon Smith (D-Gary) and Expo Communications Director Alpha Garrett.

According to Rogers, the trip is timely since HIV/AIDS is a growing threat throughout Africa and among African-Americans. The Expo delegates will meet with representatives of a foundation in the hopes of establishing a college-level student exchange program with a focus on AIDS outreach, she said. While the concept is still being hammered out, Rogers said she has forwarded information on the idea to Gov. Mitch Daniels.

The delegation also plans to meet with South Africa's vice president, members of the Zulu party and former President F.W. de Klerk and others, said Rogers.
