Urban Health Minister Olanguena Awono announced on April 19 that Cameroon will begin providing free antiretroviral treatment to almost 50,000 people with HIV/AIDS, including some 4,000 children. According to Awono, UNAIDS provided the country with a $68 million, two-year grant to help finance the treatment. ARVs will be provided to those patients registered at special health centers, a health ministry spokesperson said. UNAIDS estimates show around 5.5 percent of Cameroon's adult population have HIV.
