Massachusetts: Search for a Cure and Department of Public Health to Hold HIV Treatment and Prevention Fair

March 19, 2007

Boston Department of Public Health (DPH) officials, community health experts, and advocates will present an HIV treatment and prevention fair for individuals and organizations at the State Laboratory Institute in Jamaica Plain on Saturday, March 24.

The free event will provide condensed, easy-to-understand details from the 14th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections held in Los Angeles last month, said David Scondras, founder of Search for a Cure, which is co-sponsoring the fair with DPH. The forum will also provide details on all clinical drug trials enrolling participants, he added.

Treatment will be the focus in the morning, with presentations on HIV/AIDS drugs in research and development, hepatitis C/HIV co-infection, and women's treatment issues. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Prevention will be in the spotlight in the afternoon, with information on the prophylactic use of HIV drugs to prevent infection, research on early infection, and vaccine research.

Finally, Scondras said the forum will discuss the possibility of stopping AIDS using existing resources, including the stepped-up use of 20-minute HIV oral testing, expanded post-exposure HIV prophylaxis, and increased public awareness about the early signs of infection.

For more information or to register, telephone Search for a Cure, 617-945-5350. On-site registration will also be available.
