Latifah Reaches Out in Fact-Based "Life Support"

Hip-hop artist and actress Queen Latifah said she drew upon her own experiences growing up in New Jersey and New York in her work on "Life Support," an HBO film that premieres at 8 p.m. Saturday. In the movie, which she also executive produced, Latifah plays an HIV-positive wife, mother, and recovering addict who channels her energies into working with a Brooklyn AIDS outreach group. "I know how you can drift into experimenting with drugs and how families can be fractured by addiction to drugs," Latifah said. "It's certainly true that there is a devastating [AIDS] epidemic going on in Africa, but there truly is an epidemic here in America, too, and we aren't even taking care of ourselves here. It's definitely bad over in Africa, because the basic infrastructure is just not in place, but we need to focus on our country as well."
