California: Bono Urges Oakland Leaders to Fight Spread of AIDS
March 5, 2007
Calling the city both the "epicenter" of a new wave of HIV infections and "the epicenter of the resistance to that epidemic," Irish rock star and activist Bono visited Oakland on Saturday. At East Oakland's Allen Temple Baptist Church, Bono spent two hours meeting with AIDS groups, clergy, and HIV patients. Afterward, Bono appeared at a news conference with Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums and the Rev. J. Alfred Smith of Allen Temple. The three called on black churches to do more to fight AIDS and educate their parishioners about the epidemic.
