United Kingdom: British Pharmacy Pilots Over-the-Counter Viagra

February 14, 2007

On Feb. 14, British pharmacy chain Boots will begin a pilot program to offer Viagra without a prescription. Boots, which has about 1,500 stores across Britain, will offer the program in three of its pharmacies in Manchester, 195 miles northwest of London. Customers, ages 30-65, must make an appointment to see a pharmacist, provide a medical history, and have their blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose levels tested. The consultation and a pack of four pills cost ₤50 ($98 US). For refills, customers must see a doctor, according to Boots spokesperson Clare Stafford. The pilot program is expected to last six months. Boots will then consider whether to expand it to other locations.
