Brazil Handing Out 10 Million Condoms Ahead of Carnival

February 12, 2007

Ahead of Carnival, which starts Feb. 17 and runs until Feb. 20, Brazil's Health Ministry will distribute 10 million condoms in an effort to fight HIV/AIDS and other STDs, the official Agencia Brasil news service reported Sunday. Several nationally broadcast radio and television ads are also planned, the agency said. "The idea of this campaign is to show that the joy that comes with Carnival must be accompanied by some precautionary measures," said Health Minister Agenor Alvares. Already this year, the ministry said it has passed out 15 million condoms.
