Ralph Fiennes Visits India HIV Patients and Feels Moved by Their Strength
February 2, 2007
Film star Ralph Fiennes has been traveling to villages in western India this week in his role as a UNICEF ambassador. After meeting a group of people whose families had disowned them after learning they were HIV-positive, Fiennes said, "What moved me is not the tragedy of the shadow over these people, but the strength it brings out in them." Indians with HIV are often refused hospital treatment and shunned by their communities. "Education, awareness, and prevention are the key, but stigmatization and exclusion from family is what makes people suffer most," the actor said.
