Susan Little, M.D.

Dr. Little is an Assistant Adjunct Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at University of California San Diego (UCSD) with a research interest in HIV infection. She is also an attending physician at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in San Diego.

Dr. Little graduated from Washington University School of Medicine and then did a residency in Internal Medicine at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. She did her Infectious Diseases Fellowship at UCSD, and is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases.

Dr. Little works at the UCSD Antiviral Research Center in San Diego and conducts clinical translational research trials which focus on increasing our understanding of the pathogenesis of acute or primary HIV infection. She works with a large international collaborative team to assess viral replication dynamics, transmitted drug resistance, and host immune dynamics during acute HIV infection. These studies also evaluate therapeutic intervention strategies including antiretroviral therapy and vaccines to preserve immune function in recently infected subjects.

Her extensive research on drug resistance has been published in numerous journals and she has presented her findings at many international AIDS conferences

Dr. Little has received most of her research funding from the NIH and the California Universitywide AIDS research Program (UARP). Pharmaceutical support for research has also been received from Merck Research Laboratories, Bristol-Myers Squibb, DuPont Pharmaceutical, Glaxo-Wellcome, and Agouron Pharmaceuticals.
