He has been an investigator in the HIV Center from the beginning, collaborating on studies of psychopathology, psychoimmunology, coping and adaptation, sexual risk behavior, and long-term survival with HIV among gay men and male and female injected drug users. Currently his research is focused on mental health interventions for HIV serodiscordant couples; behavioral and mental health interventions for HIV-infected gay men; changes in attitudes, beliefs and behaviors associated with HIV medical treatment advances in both infected and uninfected individuals; and interventions to improve adherence to combination medical regimens for people living with HIV.
Dr. Remien is chairperson for the New York State Psychological Association's Task Force on AIDS; member of the New York City's Department of Health Prevention Planning Group; senior faculty for the American Psychological Association's HIV training program for psychologists; and clinical supervisor to psychiatric residents in training and volunteer group facilitators at Body Positive, a New York City community-based organization. He also maintains a part-time private practice in clinical psychology.
