Lisa Hirschhorn, M.D., M.P.H.

Lisa Hirschhorn, M.D., M.P.H.
Dr. Lisa Hirschhorn is an assistant clinical professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and senior clinical advisor on HIV/AIDS at JSI Research and Training in Boston. Trained in infectious diseases, Dr. Hirschhorn has been involved in HIV primary and specialty care and research since the late 1980s.

Currently, Dr. Hirschhorn is involved in clinical research and quality work in HIV focusing on underserved populations and women in the United States and populations in sub-Saharan Africa. She was the director of HIV Medical Care and Research at the Dimock Community Health Center for over 15 years, where she created a multi-disciplinary community-based HIV care program, which has been successful in providing HIV care to underserved individuals. The program continues to serve as a model for integrated HIV care in a community setting. Dr. Hirschhorn's other activities have included research projects in quality improvement, adherence and HIV vaccines. Her work has been published in numerous professional publications, including Annals of Human Genetics, the Journal of Infectious Diseases, the Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care and Nursing Clinics of North America.

In the United States, Dr. Hirschhorn is co-principal investigator for the New England AIDS Education and Training Center, where she has been active in training and educating health care providers. Areas in which Dr. Hirschhorn is particularly involved include the evaluation of positive prevention interventions and quality measurement and improvement in Ryan White CARE Act funded clinics.

Dr. Hirschhorn has also immersed herself in HIV treatment initiatives in Africa. As senior clinical consultant in HIV/AIDS at John Snow, Inc., and associate director of the Office of International Programs at Harvard Medical School Division of AIDS, Dr. Hirschhorn has been heavily involved in efforts to improve and evaluate HIV care and access to therapy throughout the continent, including Botswana, Tanzania, South Africa, Ghana, Malawi and Zimbabwe. She has also been active in training and educating health care providers in a number of African countries and in the Caribbean.
