Dr. Balart is a past President of the American College of Gastroenterology and has also been a Trustee of that organization since 1992. He obtained his medical degree in the early 1970s at Louisiana State University (LSU) School of Medicine. He also spent one year at the University of Southern California for a specialization in Hepatology. Dr. Balart then joined the Ochsner Medical Institutions as a Staff Member in the Section of Gastroenterology. In the mid-1980s he was appointed as Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at LSU. Shortly afterward, he also became Director of the GI Training Program at the Ochsner Clinic and Foundation and served as Medical Director of the Liver Transplant Program at that same institution. Since the 1990s, Dr. Balart has been a Staff Member of the Center for Digestive Diseases Memorial Center in New Orleans and Senior Visiting Physician at the Medical Center of Louisiana, LSU Medical School in the Department of Medicine. In the mid-1990s, he became Director of the LSU School of Medicine Liver Transplant Program and in 1998 was appointed to his current position of Head of the Section of Gastroenterology at the LSU School of Medicine.
Dr. Balart has published almost 30 peer-reviewed publications, over 50 abstracts and presentations, and contributed chapters to a number of medical texts. He has also given presentations at almost 20 postgraduate courses, seminars or workshops in the U.S. and elsewhere. He presently serves on the Editorial Boards of the American Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatologia Clinica. He is a Fellow of the ACG and a member of the AASLD.
