Dr. Jorge L. Herrera is Professor of Medicine and Assistant Director, Division of Gastroenterology at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine in Mobile, Alabama. Dr. Herrera received his M.D. from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1979. He completed an Internal Medicine residency at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Denver, Colorado, and a fellowship in Gastroenterology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. in 1986.
Dr. Herrera is a fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology as well as the American College of Physicians. He is a member of several professional organizations including the American Gastroenterological Association, the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the European Association for the Study of Liver Disease.
Dr. Herrera has published numerous articles in journals including the American Journal of Gastroenterology and Digestive Diseases. He has also contributed chapters to books such as Secrets in Gastroenterology and recently served as guest editor for the Clinics in Liver Diseases issue on "Pathophysiology of Liver Disease." His current research focuses on high-dose antiviral therapy as well as the use of pegylated interferon in the treatment of chronic hepatitis C infection.
