Gerald Pierone Jr., M.D., is the founder and executive director of the AIDS Research and Treatment Center of the Treasure Coast in Fort Pierce, Fla. The center is a nonprofit medical clinic that provides health care for more than 500 people living with HIV and AIDS. He also maintains a private practice in Vero Beach, Fla.
Dr. Pierone is actively involved in clinical research efforts, though he holds a special interest in body shape changes and cardiovascular complications of HIV treatment. He is a principal investigator in the FACES trial of Sculptra (poly-L-lactic acid) for HIV-related facial lipoatrophy. He is also involved in trials of streamlined antiretroviral treatment, such as FOTO (five days on, two days off), and has published a pilot study on the use of Kaletra (lopinavir/ritonavir) monotherapy in AIDS Clinical Trials.

Dr. Pierone received his medical degree from the University of Florida in 1983, completed his internal medicine residency training at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in New Jersey, and trained in infectious diseases at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases and is a member of the International AIDS Society, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the American Academy of HIV Medicine.
