Eric Daar, M.D.

Eric Daar, M.D.
Dr. Daar is the chief of HIV medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, Calif., and a professor of medicine at the University of California-Los Angeles' David Geffen School of Medicine. He has been an active HIV physician and researcher since the 1980s; during the past three decades, he has led dozens of studies on a vast range of HIV-related issues, with a particular focus on coinfections and other health complications associated with HIV and HIV treatment, including hepatitis C, metabolic complications, cardiovascular disease and psychosocial issues such as depression.

A highly regarded clinician/researcher, Dr. Daar is a well-traveled lecturer on the management of HIV infection and a regular presenter at the world's most important HIV-related conferences. Scores of his studies have been published in peer-reviewed journals, and he has authored many chapters and clinical reviews in HIV publications. Dr. Daar is a former associate editor of Clinical Infectious Diseases, currently serves on the editorial board of the journals AIDS and Current HIV/AIDS Reports, and is a peer reviewer for more than 20 medical journals, including the Journal of the American Medical Association, Journal of Infectious Diseases and the Journal of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndromes.

Dr. Daar has remained true to Los Angeles, his native town: Aside from a four-year sojourn to Washington, D.C., where he earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine, Dr. Daar has spent most of his life in the City of Angels. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of California-Los Angeles, and once he completed his medical education, he returned to UCLA's Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for his internship, residency and fellowship. He lives just outside of Los Angeles with his wife and their four sons.

You can learn much more about Dr. Daar in this exclusive interview at The Body. We interviewed Dr. Daar in 2005, after he became one of 10 physicians to receive The Body's inaugural HIV Leadership Award for his outstanding years of service to the HIV community.
