International News Canada: Alberta Publisher Donates $1 Million to Fight AIDSJanuary 22, 2007 On Thursday, the Stephen Lewis Foundation announced the largest single grant in its three-year history. Calgary magazine publisher Jackie Flanagan has donated $1 million Canadian ($850,457 US) to be used on behalf of women in Africa, much of it for training nurses and educating family members who care for women who are terminally ill with HIV/AIDS. More than 13 million women in sub-Saharan Africa are living with the disease -- 59 percent of the region's total infections. Around 90 percent of AIDS care is home-based, often provided by older women. "We are filled with admiration and gratitude for this remarkable gift," said foundation Executive Director Ilana Landsberg-Lewis. Since its founding in 2003, the Stephen Lewis Foundation has raised more than $20 million Canadian ($17 million US) for the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa.
