Prevention/Epidemiology Richard Gere to India Sex Workers: Reject Customers Who Refuse CondomsJanuary 11, 2007 On Wednesday in Mumbai, U.S. film star Richard Gere told a crowd of some 15,000 prostitutes that they should refuse sex with clients who will not use condoms. "No condoms, no sex!" Gere led the crowd in chanting. Gere had earlier visited sex workers who showed him how they use pictures and other materials to teach their colleagues about safer sex. Gere launched his "Heroes Project" four years ago to spread the HIV prevention message to Indians. One sex worker said that, in the past, she "didn't even know what a condom was, let alone how to use it." Now she lobbies fellow workers to refuse customers who will not use protection.
