International News South Korea's Ban Ki-moon Takes the Reins of the United Nations With Tough AgendaJanuary 3, 2007 On Jan. 1, South Korea's Ban Ki-moon became the United Nation's eighth secretary-general, succeeding Kofi Annan, who held the post for a decade. Ban, 62, said he would work to strengthen the UN's three pillars -- security, development and human rights -- by restoring trust in the agency. Among issues at the top of UN's agenda will be fighting AIDS, addressing rising Mideast tensions, confronting violence in the Darfur province of Sudan, and combating poverty.
