International News European Firms Pledge to Step Up Fight Against AIDS in AfricaDecember 8, 2006 On World AIDS Day, about 20 major European firms active in the developing world promised to do more to fight the epidemic, especially in Africa. Companies that have signed on include the cosmetics firm L'Oreal, oil company Total, the Accor hotel and catering chain and the brewer Heineken. More companies are expected to join, said Bertrand Collomb, who chairs the construction group BTP Lafarge and is vice president of the Global Business Coalition Against AIDS. In one example of an initiative, Accor Director-General Gilles Pelisson said some of the corporation's hotels will offer condoms to staff, hold workshops to raise awareness, and provide home care to ill employees.
