Doctors Without Borders Calls for Affordable Treatment on World AIDS Day

December 5, 2006

On World AIDS Day, Doctors Without Borders challenged international institutions to come up with ways to help developing nations buy expensive new AIDS drugs. "New [World Health Organization]-recommended regimens for patients starting treatment can be up to six times more expensive than today's most commonly used combinations," said DWB's statement, while people experiencing side effects or drug resistance may need treatment that is at least 50 times more expensive. "It's clear as day that at current prices, the cost of accessing new drugs will bankrupt treatment programs, but governments, industry and multilateral agencies are doing far too little to address the issue," DWB said.
