Oregon to Implement $1.3 Million HUD Grant to Provide Rent, Support Services for HIV-Positive People

Oregon in January 2007 will begin administering a three-year, $1.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for support services and rental housing for HIV-positive people, the Oregonian reports. HUD recently awarded $27.5 million in grants to 26 programs serving more than 1,000 HIV-positive people nationwide through the agency's Housing Opportunities for Persons With AIDS Program. Ryan Deibert, program coordinator for the Oregon Housing Opportunities in Partnership Program, said the grant will focus on medical and housing hurdles for people with criminal records, adding, "Being able to stabilize housing is really that first step for those folks to be able to work on everything else that's going on in their lives." According to the Oregonian, the state will provide services throughout the state except in the Portland area, where the Cascade AIDS Project will implement the program (Heinz, Oregonian, 11/2). HOPWA in 2005 budgeted $282 million to help programs nationwide provide housing for HIV-positive people and their families (Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report, 12/2/05).
