Zimbabwe: Burial Space Running Out

November 1, 2006

A dire shortage of burial space in the Zimbabwean capital of Harare has prompted citizens to look elsewhere for places to bury their dead, the government-run Herald newspaper reported. Harare's six government cemeteries are either full or nearing capacity, the paper said. City officials are urging people to cremate the dead, but this runs counter to the culture of many Zimbabweans, and a critical shortage of coal has stymied cremation as an option in any case. The shortage of burial space is tied to Zimbabwe's AIDS epidemic, which claims the lives of around 3,000 people each week, and to the nation's economic collapse, which has fueled food shortages and curtailed medical care for the sick.
