Bulgarian Nurses AIDS Trial Resumes in Libya

October 31, 2006

After a five-week break, the trial of five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor accused of deliberately infecting 426 hospitalized children with HIV resumed today in Tripoli. The six, who maintain their innocence, were convicted and sentenced to death in May 2004. Last year, an appeal of their sentence resulted in a supreme court order for a retrial. There have been persistent international demands for the medics' release. In the Oct. 25 issue of Science, a prestigious group of U.S., European and Canadian physicians and scientists pointed to the lack of credible evidence presented at trial and called on Libya to free the six.
